CELPIP Re-Evaluation: Cost, Timeline, and Real Results

You needed a 9 in writing and received an 8. Before paying for a CELPIP re-evaluation, check the rules, the fee and the wait. Decide whether you can afford the cost and time if your score stays the same.

Each example links to a public Reddit post or comment. Some include screenshots. We have not checked these claims against the writers' official score reports. One person may appear in more than one comment or thread.

An earlier version said we had “100+ reports” and that most scores rose. We cannot verify those counts, so we have removed those claims. These selected examples do not give a reliable success rate: people who receive a surprising increase may be more likely to post.

Can your CELPIP score go down after a re-evaluation?

The examples here do not prove that a score cannot go down. The public policy explains refunds when a level changes, but does not promise that scores cannot decrease. If that risk affects your decision, ask CELPIP before you apply.

A comment claiming that scores cannot fall does not establish CELPIP's policy.

How long does a CELPIP re-evaluation take?

CELPIP estimates about one to two weeks after you apply and pay. Allow for that wait when planning, but do not treat it as a promised deadline.

Individual experiences vary. One commenter reported a three-day turnaround; another described two weeks.

These examples do not show which wait is most common. Leave room for delays when planning your application; do not count on the quickest reported result.

How much does re-evaluation cost?

The re-evaluation fee depends on which components you choose. CELPIP's public results page does not list a single fee. You pay when you apply, so check the total and tax in your account first.

An earlier version of this article quoted about $55 per component. That is not a verified current price.

The results policy says you get a refund if the level changes for a component you paid to re-evaluate. The FAQ says Speaking or Writing must increase.

These descriptions differ. Check the terms in your account or ask CELPIP before paying. Neither page promises a refund if the score stays the same. Budget for that outcome.

Reading and Listening versus Writing and Speaking

You can request a re-evaluation of any component. CELPIP says Reading and Listening scores are unlikely to change because a computer rates the answers. If practice keeps showing the same weakness, work on it before another test rather than count on a re-evaluation to raise the score.

Human raters assess Speaking against performance standards. Writing uses an AI/human hybrid system, and the rating team checks the scores, according to the current FAQ. A re-evaluation provides another assessment. It does not mean the first score was wrong or that a higher score is likely.

A decision checklist

Before submitting, write down:

1. The exact result you need and why. Check the requirement for that skill rather than an average.
2. Your reason for questioning the result. Were you surprised, or can you point to what you did well? Your memory alone cannot establish the correct official score.
3. The current fee and deadline. Check both in your account and allow for an unchanged result.
4. Your alternative plan. Consider what you would practise and when another test could fit if the result stays the same.

A fresh practice recording can help you find weaknesses. It cannot prove that your earlier test score was wrong. An AI estimate or model answer cannot establish what level a re-evaluation should award, either.
