Question: Why did the man wait before bringing the bicycle in?
Answer B: The problem did not show itself in ordinary riding.
He says the bike runs smoothly on flat ground, which is why he delayed taking it in. The fault appears when climbing. The other choices borrow details from the conversation without explaining the delay: the mechanic rejects the bottom bracket diagnosis, the trip creates urgency, and his hope for a simple adjustment is a later reaction.

Customer: Morning. I phoned yesterday about the noise my bike is making. I'm riding to Sandbanks on Friday, three days with camping gear, so I'd rather not discover halfway there that something's wrong.
Mechanic: Right, the Friday trip. Put it on the stand and turn the pedals over slowly. Hm. That grinding is coming from the back, not the bottom bracket. And when you shift up, does it jump?
Customer: It does, but only when I'm climbing. On the flat it's smooth, which is why I kept putting off bringing it in.
Mechanic: That tells me what I need. Your chain has stretched, and a stretched chain chews the teeth on the cassette until they can't hold it under load. Flat ground doesn't load it enough to slip. A hill does. Replacing only the chain is false economy, because a new one on a worn cassette skips within a week.
Customer: So both, then. I was hoping you'd say it was something I could tighten.

What to listen for in each of the six parts
A full mock helps you practise pacing. Use a shorter drill when you need to work on one type of question. Parts 1 to 3 use spoken questions; later parts ask you to follow details, opinions and relationships across a longer recording.

- Part 1: Problem solving
- Follow the problem, the options and the final decision across three sections. In the sample above, separate the reason for delaying the repair from the reason it is urgent now.
- Part 2: A daily life conversation
- Notice how the speakers know each other and what they want. A polite suggestion can reveal an intention without stating it directly.
- Part 3: Information
- Attach each number, date and condition to its purpose. A familiar detail is only useful if it answers the question being asked.
- Part 4: A news item
- Keep track of who did what, where and why. Separate the main event from background information when completing the statements.
- Part 5: A discussion
- Track each speaker's opinion and how the others respond. In the official test this part uses video; avoid assigning one person's view to someone else.
- Part 6: Viewpoints
- Listen for the speaker's attitude and the reasons behind each view. Qualifiers such as 'sometimes' or 'only if' can change whether an answer fits.

Six parts: Problem Solving, a Daily Life Conversation, Information, a News Item, a Discussion, and Viewpoints, for 38 scored questions. Official section timing is 46 to 55 minutes and may include unscored items. Our mocks contain 38 questions; each exam card shows its practice timer.

Use your listening result to choose the next drill
After your mock, note which part cost you the most answers. Was it a missed detail, the speaker's opinion, or a change of plan? Practise that part and write down what made the correct answer fit. Then try another timed mock to check your progress.
