CELPIP vs IELTS for Express Entry: Which Gets You More CRS Points?

The same CLB profile earns the same language points whether it comes from CELPIP-General or IELTS General Training. Switching the name of the test does not earn extra CRS points. What matters is the level you demonstrate in each skill.

For example, IELTS scores of Listening 8.0, Reading 8.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0 meet at least CLB 9 in every skill; Reading is already CLB 10. That profile is not an example of missing CLB 9.

This started as a personal problem: on IELTS, a single writing half-band kept one of us one CLB tier lower than the rest of the score, and switching to CELPIP cleared that bottleneck. That is our experience; it does not establish that CELPIP is easier for everyone.

Compare the CLB conversions first

The tables show the minimum bands at these levels. Check each skill separately against IRCC's language-test tables. The numbering systems are different; a simpler conversion does not imply a lower proficiency requirement.

CELPIP-General to CLB - it is 1:1:

IELTS Writing 6.5 is CLB 8; Writing 7.0 reaches CLB 9. Listening has different thresholds: 7.0 remains in CLB 7, 7.5 reaches CLB 8, and 8.0 reaches CLB 9. Do not apply the Writing conversion to Listening.

What a higher CLB changes in the CRS

These are first-official-language core points per ability from the official CRS criteria, checked September 11, 2026:

CLB 10 is the ceiling for core first-official-language points in each ability. A result above CLB 10 does not add more points in that category. CLB 9 is one step below that ceiling and can also affect skill-transferability combinations, depending on your other qualifications.

For an applicant without an accompanying spouse, four CLB 8 abilities give 92 core language points and four CLB 9 abilities give 124: an increase of 32. With an accompanying spouse, that comparison is 88 to 116, an increase of 28. The gain comes from better results on either accepted test.

Skill-transferability points also depend on your education, work experience, other combinations and category caps. Reaching CLB 9 in all four abilities can affect those combinations, but it does not automatically add 50 points or guarantee an invitation. Calculate the complete profile using IRCC's current criteria.

Both tests involve human assessment of productive skills. CELPIP's current FAQ describes Writing as a hybrid AI/human system with rating-team verification. Recorded speaking does not eliminate judgment or score variability. IELTS General Training is the relevant comparison for Express Entry; its reading and writing material should not be confused with IELTS Academic.

Fees and availability can change by location. Compare the full checkout price and the provider's current result window before booking. A report that someone received results quickly is not a deadline guarantee.

What switching stories can and cannot tell you

These accounts can suggest something to try. They cannot establish a success rate or predict your score. People choose whether to post, practise for different lengths of time, and may improve between tests. Treat a story about a large writing increase as an individual experience, not an expected gain.

A practical comparison before paying for another test

1. Write down the requirement for each skill. Separate your program's eligibility requirement from a higher CRS target.
2. Try representative tasks in both formats. Use unseen material and the intended timing. Do not compare a familiar untimed exercise with a new full mock.
3. Review the weak skill. For speaking, listen to your recording. For writing, check the complete response against the relevant criteria. A qualified teacher's review can help; an AI estimate is not an official result.
4. Include the cost of changing formats. Test fees, travel, available dates and time to learn a new interface all matter.
5. Choose using repeated practice evidence. One unusually good mock is not enough to predict an exam outcome.

Switching tests and using your results

IRCC accepts CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training for Express Entry. CELPIP-General LS and IELTS Academic are not substitutes for those versions. IRCC does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry.

Results must be less than two years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit the permanent residence application. Follow IRCC's current instructions for entering valid results. A change after an invitation needs to be assessed against the requirements for that application; do not assume the original profile score settles it.

FAQ

Is CELPIP easier than IELTS? There is no universal answer. Use timed practice to compare the formats, especially your weakest skill. CELPIP's direct CLB numbering does not make a target level automatically easier.

Can I switch from IELTS to CELPIP for Express Entry? Yes. CELPIP-General is an accepted test. Use your valid results according to IRCC's current instructions, and check the requirements if you have already received an invitation to apply.

Does IRCC accept CELPIP for Express Entry? Yes, CELPIP-General specifically. CELPIP-General LS is not accepted for Express Entry.

Is IELTS One Skill Retake accepted for Express Entry? No. IRCC does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. Use results from an accepted test version that meets its requirements.

Which test gives more CRS points? Neither gives a test-name bonus. The same CLB profile and otherwise identical application produce the same language points.

What is IELTS 7.0 in CLB? Reading, Writing and Speaking 7.0 reach CLB 9. Listening 7.0 is CLB 7; Listening needs 7.5 for CLB 8 and 8.0 for CLB 9.

What CELPIP score is CLB 9? CELPIP 9 in a skill is CLB 9 in that skill. Check all four abilities rather than an average.

How many extra points does CLB 9 give over CLB 8? Across all four first-language abilities, the core increase is 32 without an accompanying spouse or 28 with one. The full CRS effect depends on the rest of your profile.
