PTE Core to CLB chart
PTE Core was not built on the CLB scale, so IRCC publishes a range of PTE scores for each CLB level, and the ranges differ by ability. Writing asks for the most: CLB 7 starts at 69 in Writing but at 60 in Listening and Reading.
| CLB level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10+ | 89 | 88 | 90 | 89 |
| CLB 9 | 82 | 78 | 88 | 84 |
| CLB 8 | 71 | 69 | 79 | 76 |
| CLB 7 | 60 | 60 | 69 | 68 |
| CLB 6 | 50 | 51 | 60 | 59 |
| CLB 5 | 39 | 42 | 51 | 51 |
| CLB 4 | 28 | 33 | 41 | 42 |
Scores are the minimum for each CLB level per ability. A score between two rows keeps the lower CLB. CLB 7 in all four abilities is the Federal Skilled Worker minimum.
FAQ
PTE Core and CLB questions
Does Express Entry accept PTE Academic?
No. IRCC accepts PTE Core for Express Entry and other economic immigration programs. PTE Academic is a different test for study purposes, and IRCC won't take its results for permanent residence.
What PTE Core score is CLB 7?
CLB 7 needs Listening 60, Reading 60, Writing 69 and Speaking 68 on PTE Core. The cutoffs differ by ability, so a 65 counts as CLB 7 in Listening and Reading but only CLB 6 in Writing and Speaking.
What PTE Core score is CLB 9?
CLB 9 needs Listening 82, Reading 78, Writing 88 and Speaking 84. Writing is the hardest ability to push up on PTE Core: CLB 9 starts at 88 and CLB 10 needs a perfect 90.
What PTE Core score gives the maximum CRS language points?
CLB 10 or higher in every ability, which on PTE Core means Listening 89, Reading 88, Writing 90 and Speaking 89. That earns 34 CRS points per ability for a single applicant, or 136 in total.
Does PTE Core round my score up to the next CLB?
No. A score between two cutoffs keeps the lower CLB. A Speaking score of 83 is CLB 8, because CLB 9 starts at 84.
Is PTE Core or CELPIP better for CLB?
Both are accepted and both convert to the same CLB scale, so the better test is the one you perform best on. CELPIP maps one to one (CELPIP 9 is CLB 9), while PTE Core uses different cutoffs per ability. If you are close to a cutoff on one test, compare the charts before you book a retake.
